OTR & OTA Online Exam Prep Course

 Permanent link

A big thanks to all the students who have been participating in the Pilot OT Advantage Online Exam Prep Courses!  This past weekend was the launch of the pilot course and the experience has been great.  There have been students from all over the US to take part in this wonderful course, as well as contribute their knowledge.

The feedback has been tremendous and will only make the online courses better and more effective. Remember, there is one more pilot OTR course this Friday, May 1, 2009 and a pilot OTA course May 22, 2009.  Time and space is still available for YOU!

To give everyone an idea of the areas students are enjoying:

  • Group work
  • Multiple choice questions and clinical simulation questions.
  • The instructor teaching others how to reason through sample exam questions
  • The ease in joining a course from home
  • The study tactics and skills taught to incorporate into your self-study program

And of course, there are always areas we need to improve:

  • Audio: Some students had difficulty understanding or using the audio properly.  OT Advantage plans to allot for more time to troubleshoot and ensure everyone is comfortable with their computer and audio ahead of time.
  • Q&A:  Students would like more time to ask questions.  Currently, questions are answered at the end of modules, during the Q&A portion, and the Q&A presented during class is sent out to the students who sign up for notes from the note taker.  OT Advantage, plans to create another forum for students to feel comfortable to ask questions and get their answers promptly.
  • More Group Discussion:  The course has group sessions developed ahead of time.  However, students enjoy learning from others who may have a different knowledge base from their school and clinical fieldwork settings.  OT Advantage plans to add more opportunities for students to discuss and learn from each other to complement the learning experience.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this weekend a success.  This is one move toward making learning more accessible and creative!

Good luck on your future NBCOT Certification Examination.

Hello everyone,

I purchased study review from nbcotexam.com. is there anybody knows with this study review? I just want to know if this is helpful for OTA exam.

My professor said the nbcotexam.com guide is good, because it's like getting a copy of all the Notes you would have taken in all of you classes. It's good for both COTA and OT exams. It's really big too.. I'm in the process of studying now, so everything helps! :)

I have taken the OTR exam twice and I am waiting to get the approval to take the exam for the third time. I just got my temporary license and I hope to start working this coming Wednesday (Oct. 19th). I feel like I need to just get in the clinic and start making some money to take this exam all over again. I feel very overwhelmed and I am nervous to start studying again because I have no clue where to start. When I took the test the first time I did the following:

1. Made index cards
2. Took practice exams in the back of the review book
3. Went through and studied the prep books

Unfortunately this method didn't help cause I scored a 417 on the exam. Also I got hit with a lot of management questions. So I looked at which domain I needed improvement in and started the studying process all over again, but this time I worked on the following:

1. Purchased the NBCOT practice exams that test you in each domain for $215.00

2. Religiously went through each practice question and tried to understand the rationale behind what the question was asking.

3. I literally just started taking practice exam after practice exam. The reason being is I was reading the question but not quite understanding what the question was asking. It was hard because I am a rusher and I get very inpatient after question 133. I needed to learn how to pace myself and visualize what the questions was asking.

Unfortunately this didn't work because I still am not a licensed OT. I do not know my score yet, but I will admit I was prepared for most of the questions because they were really similar to the practice exam questions I purchased on NBCOT.

The only way to boost my confidence right not is to see that my second score has at least increased. At least I know I'm getting there...it may be taking a while and it may have already cost me more that $1300-$1500, but I'm going to keep on taking it until I am a licensed OT.

My new strategy is to go back to the basics of OT..back to the first year of the program. I am not going to focus so much on the practice exams, since I pretty much know what to expect now. I am going to take out my Pedretti and other text books and just start reading and familiarizing myself again with the basics.

Lets hope the third times a charm and good luck to all of you who are taking this mind blowing, anxiety driven, I feel like I'm in limbo EXAM!

Ah my heart totally goes out to you. I too I'm in the same situation. My frustration is I'm already qualified in Ireland!!!! I have spent months and hundreds of dollars to become certified and to no avail!!

I feel my issue is understanding what the question is asking, but with me Ithere are cultural differences between American English and EU English. Plus I don't understand why the exam is even timed??

This time round I'm looking into a study group, 2/3 heads are better than 1!!!

I do agree that part of it has to do with luck, I have spoken to alot of friends who appeared to get more straight forward questions. I on the other hand was hit with management, questions, research Standard Dev, inferential statistics. Nowhere did I get asked about developmental grasps, feeding, SCI!!!!

To me this exam is about good exam taking skills. On a positive note he CST questions are structured very well, as this is how we think as therapist.

Best of luck!!

I really need help with the COTA exam. I've taken it 3 times and now I'm preparing for the 4th. I graduated w/ nearly a 4.0 and feel I've retained most of the knowledge, I've used the NBCOT practices exams, 3 or 4 different texts and their practice exams. I'm at a loss, is there no definitive information for studying? I know treatment planning is my low category, but I don't know what specifically is holding me back. SOMEONE HELP!
