I am a foreign trained OT in the US.I took the test 3 times, I need to pass this time. Any suggestions how to start and how to study. Is there anybody out there who took the 2009 test? Can you give me any feedback? Thanks for your time.

Yes. I took it five times and passed it this week

I took the test 2 times and is waiting to take it again for the 3rd time. Is there a time limit on how many times we take the exam and need a refresher course? Is it after the 3rd try?
Posted by: HarmeetOT at 4/11/2009 1:16 PM

According to NBCOT it is not required to take any refresher course.....I too am waiting to take it again for the 3rd time...I'm sooo heartbroken over this test...It really has me drained...I've studied, and studied....
Posted by: pgoines at 4/14/2009 5:15 PM

Babygirl, Congrats on passing how did u prepare...
Posted by: pgoines at 4/14/2009 5:18 PM

I just took the '09 test for the first time and felt so unprepared for it because it seemed as if I focused and studied so many details and could not apply that knowledge to the scenarios presented. I was really surprised as to how hard this test really is. I also need some studying tips, anything will help. Thanks!
Posted by: Ana at 4/15/2009 9:40 PM

I just found out i passed the new 2009 test. TIPS:
1. OTR Study Guide and Study Guide Supplement, by NBCOT (pdf order form) THIS ONE IS A MUST. GIVES YOU A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT KIND OF QUESTIONS WILL BE ON THE ACTUAL EXAM
2.Occupational Therapy Examination Review Guide (3rd ed.), by Caryn Johnson. THIS ONE IS ALSO A MUST HAS A TOTAL OF 4 PRACTICE TESTS 800 QUESTIONS. YOU CAN DESIGN YOU OWN TESTS TO TEST YOU ON A SPECIFIC AREA OR DOMAIN I.E PEDS, MENTAL HEALTH ETC.
3. National Occupational Therapy Certification Exam Review and Study Guide, by Rita Cottrell. THIS IS ANOTHER MUST HAVE, BUT MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE LATEST EDITION
WHICH HAS THE NEW CLINICAL SIMULATION SECTIONS AS WELL. I THINK THE NEW ONE IS CALLED RITA-CORTELL SOR SOMETHING. THE MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS ARE HARDER THAN THE ACTUAL EXAM SO DON’T FREAK OUT IF YOU SCREW UP. DO USE THE STUDY GUIDE TO REVIEW DIFFERENT GROUP TYPES AND HOW THE EVOLVE (DIRECTIVE, TASK BASED, COOPERATIVE ETC.) YOUR ROLE AS A FACILITATOR, PEDS SECTION FOR PROGRESSION OF EATING/DRESSING. DON’T GO CRAZY ABOUT WORRYING ABOUT THE DETAILS…JUST KNOW WHAT COMES AFTER ANOTHER…DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE EXACT AGE RANGES..GO OVER UE SPINAL CORD INJURY AND WHAT THE CAN DO IN DETAIL UP TO C8- EX C6 VS C7 ETC…DO KNOW RANCHOS LOS AMIGOS + ALLEN’S COGNITIVE LEVELS…MOST IMPORTANTLY REMEMBER THE CONCEPT OF DO NO HARM DURING THE CLINICAL SIMULATIONS…EX. CARDIAC PATIENTS (DIFFERENT ACTIVITY LEVELS IN GENERAL, NOT IN DETAIL) POST HIP OR KNEE REPLACEMENT PATIENTS, TENDON REPAIR ETC…SIMPLE DURING CLINICAL SIMULATIONS IS IF YOU ARE NOT SURE DON’T SELECT IT…READ ALL OF THE OPTIONS FIRST AND START BY SELECTING THE MOST OBVIOUS (THE ONES YOU ARE MOST SURE ABOUT) FIRST AND THEN LEAVE THE ONES YOU THINK MAY CAUSE HARM OR WASTE TIME OR CAUSE AN EMOTIONAL RESPONSE FROM THE PATIENT.
4. NBCOT ONLINE PRACTICE EXAM $75…TOTALLY WORTH IT..PURCHASE THIS PACKAGE AND TAKE IT A WEEK OR A WEEK AND A HALF BEFORE THE ACTUAL EXAM…IT HAS A CLINICAL SCENARIO SECTION AND 100 MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS…TAKE THE EXAM AND USE THE REMAINING WEEK TO WORK ON YOUR WEAKNESSES. YOU ALSO GET SEPARATE SCORES FOR CLINICAL AND MULTIPLE CHOICE SECTIONS. TELLS YOU WHETHER YOU PASSED OR FAILED.

JUST KEEP PRACTICING THE SAMPLE EXAMS..MOSTLY JOHNSON AND NBCOT…DON’T MAKE YOURSELF GO CRAZY OVER RITA MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAMS JUST USE IT AS A STUDY GUIDE AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CLINICAL SIMULATIONS. ALWAYS OBSERVE PT IN THEIR NATURAL SETTING, ACTUAL TASK, ACTUAL ENVIRONMENT ETC.
SO GO OUT AND GET EM…..

Ya ME... I took the practice exams from NBCOT, i got the 2008 version of the Rita book and have seen the 2009 version.. not much has changed at all except the addition of the sim questions they include. I jumped 75 points from the 1st to the 2nd exam so i know i am on the right track. I went back to the basics and read most of my text books to get the content and OT evals n interventions per dx. So I am gonna con't to do that and take a practice test once a week. Also... I contacted one of my professors from the program.. if you feel like you need a boost of advice go to them... they are willing to help.

Pgoines: I totally feel you... I am completely emotionally, spiritually, mentally drained from this experience. But... I refuse to give up I didn't bust my butt for nothing. I will pass this!

I think that one mistake most students make while studying for the NBCOT is worrying about the little details. The test is not designed to test your memory skills, but rather your competence as an entry level therapist. Questions are geared towards safety, activity analysis, and client centered scenarios. The material that you do need to know in some details is Spinal Cord injuries and the residual abilities, Ranchos Los Amigos, and Allen's levels. You should concentrate on learning how to take the test and read the questions by understanding the questions in the practice exams. OTR Study Guide and Study Guide Supplement, by NBCOT (pdf order form) is an excellent tool in understanding how the questions will be posed. Take is and review the answers, understand the reasoning, and use the areas addressed in the questions to help develop a study plan. Johnson is also great tool. Taking many practice exams and getting used taking the exam on a computer,as well a getting used to the type of questions are the most important things. Remember just because you were a nerd in school and memorized every single detail, does not mean you will do well in the exam, simply because that is not what the exam is testing you on. In fact, it is often the "goody" "goody" students who screw up the exam because they can't get out of that study/memorize everything mentality, and have not learned through the practice exams to think on their own. Hope this helps. As for me, I studied for 3 weeks, for 4-5 hours a day and was quite ready.

I am taking the exam for the 3rd time coming up in May. I feel everyone who posted up a comment, I am very drained from this exam. I feel as though I will be a great therapist, however this one exam is holding me back. I have done everything posted up here, and I think it really comes down to "how to take the exam and reading the questions" This has been a very tough experience for many students, but we will all succeed and I hope people don't start giving up. I know I have spent so much money on the material and also 1500 for the exam. I hope to pass this third time. STAY POSITIVE!!!
Posted by: ABC at 4/22/2009 8:39 PM

It feels good to know that i am not alone. I have taken the exam twice and have failed both times. I feel like i have grasped the exam structure and i am able to clinically reason through the exam questions. My main problem, (both times i've taken the exam,) is that i run out of time and find myself having to rush through the last few ( 20-30)questions just so i complete the exam before my time runs out. Has anyone else had this problem or do you fell like the 4 hours allocated is more then sufficient.

Another hard thing about taking & re-taking this exam is figuring out where to start studying after having failed multiple times....especially when you feel you have covered all the material.
Posted by: HOPE at 4/26/2009 1:28 AM

Well i have failed the exam four times. I was so close. Just a few points away. I feel stuck like i dont know where to begin or start.. This is very depressing. This exam is holding up evrything for me. I have spent so much money but i REFUSE TO GIVE UP! We can do it guys!
Posted by: Rissa at 4/28/2009 11:30 PM

I have taken the 2009 test and failed. I was thinking if someone is interested in study with me. I have taken the test 4 times.
Posted by: mona at 4/30/2009 2:09 PM

I have just found out today that I failed my exam for a second time and very upset!! I'm an Occupational Therapist working in Europe with 3 years experience, sooo verrrry frustrated. I feel my problem is not understanding what the questions are asking, particularly the ones in service planning and marketing?? I totally agree on that you don't need to know the fine details, but definately know the your protocols and time frames for flexor tendon Kleinert/Durans as they does ask specifics on e.g. one month after a flexor tendon injury what should the therapist do next?" Know the Eval & intervention stages of burns. Guys, do you think they include some of the quesions you got wrong from the previous exam?? I felt I had seen some of my questions before?? We won't give, WE CAN DO THHIS!!!
People have felt that the Johnson R/V guide was a better reflection of the exam questions???

Hey Mona-where do you live??

Dear all OT's. I have a question for you guys if you can help me. I am planning to take the exam in June this year and on the NBCOT website there are some online study stuff which we can buy tp prepare for it. Now I don't know that the whole package which is around $215 is just for all online stuff or does it include the books i.e, Rita Cottrell and Caryn Johnson. Also do you know where to buy it from(used ones). I have been working as an OT in Uk for 10 years and now planning to move to US. Please guide me. Thanks
Posted by: slptak at 5/2/2009 2:49 PM

I'm gonna start studying on Monday and I'm planning to take the exam on July. I am also working full time and have 2 kids. This is my 4rth attempt to take this exam. I hope I finally make it.. I want to give my family a better life. We can do it. Anybody studying OT test from CA?
Posted by: Maria at 5/2/2009 8:47 PM

Ya Maria i am taking the test in Cali. This will be my 3rd time around retaking it. I was 9 points away from passing last time around.
Posted by: HarmeetOT at 5/4/2009 10:52 AM

Hi Harmeet,
I am taking the exam in July as well and wonder if you can tell me what books you are reading to prepare for the exam. I have been working as an OT for 10 years. Thanks
Posted by: slptak at 5/6/2009 10:24 AM

I'm taking the test for the second time in June. I saw that some people would be interested in studying together, I'm game if you are.
Posted by: Tif at 5/11/2009 7:32 PM

To answer SLPTAK's question about the package NBCOT offers, it does not include any other material other than NBCOT Official material. NBCOT does not endorse or recommend any other study products than their own.
Posted by: OT-Advantage at 5/13/2009 2:00 AM

I feel your pain guys. I just found out last week that I failed for the second time. I wake up every morning and the first thing I think of is this test. I wanted to give a suggestion on the books. This past weekend I went to the library in AZ and they had the Johnson book in stock and it also had the cd with it. Check out the library and see if they have it. That could save you some money! If there is anyone in AZ who would like to study let me know. We will make this!!
Posted by: Alex at 5/19/2009 12:01 PM

It makes me feel so much better to know that I am not alone. I failed the first time. I also feel like my life is on hold. I take the exam again on May 26th. I bought the Johnson, Lorch, and DeAngelis book and I feel more prepared than the first time. Hopefully it pays off. Those of you that have the Johnson book, how are you doing on the practice tests (if you are taking them straight from the book)? I scored in the 60s and 70s on all 4 exams!! Now I am really freakin out! I got my overall NBCOT results in the mail about 2 months ago and wont look at them in fear of feeling even more discouraged. Anyways, good luck to all of you:) This experience will only make us stronger people and practitioners:)

How is the new OTR exam? I got the exam a few times and still unsuccessful. I need to overcome this exam.
Posted by: pat at 5/20/2009 2:21 PM

woo its been a while since i logged on here. Hard to remember to check back on the blogs on here. I am on facebook.com too if anyone needs a question answered or just needs OT support going through this exam. Reading what everyone has been typing on here is like listening to myself talk lol.
Slptak... to answer your question the books you really should invest in is the Rita Fleming-Castaldy book (this book they assume you only should use to prep for the exam) which I disagree, Johnson, Lorch, and DeAngelis book has about 800 questions that are set up very similarly to the NBCOT exam questions (not counting the simulation questions), But the books that really are helping me understand OT and how to apply evaluation, intervetion, intervention planning etc to the questions.. are my text books I got throughout the OT program. Since you are from the UK not sure how the program is different and what materials you use. Plus you are already a practicing OT so you might not need all that. So amazon.com the 2 books n let me know if i helped at all. If ya got questions.. facebook me :)

Thanks Harmeet for all your suggestions. I have bought both the books(Rita and Johnson)and very soon I will buy the NBCOT official practice test pack. I have got only few weeks to go...hmmmm. I am scoring between 50-60% on Rita and on Johnson practise tests. Don't know whether its good enough.... but will work hard. I have been working in UK for the past 10 years mostly in Ortho and hand but really revising old good paediatrics and psychiatry. Anisha you can email me if you want as I am on facebook(Santosh)and my email id is slptak@hotmail.com as I did my OT degree from India. So if I can be of any help..its my first attempt so probably you know more than me re this exam. Thanks

Hey everyone:) I just found out I failed for the 2nd time. I am thinking about purchasing the "NBCOT-OTR Exam Flashcard Secrets: NBCOT Test Practice Questions & Review for the Occupational Therapist Registered Examination (Cards)". Has anyone had any sucess with these? It is my last resort since I already have BOTH the Rita Fleming-Castaldy study guides and also "Johnson, Lorch, and DeAngelis" book. I actually felt good about the exam this time too. Apparently it wasnt good enough:( Does anyone know when the next online prep course on OT-Advantage is? Thanks for listening:)

There is a course this Friday and space for more participants! Here is the link for the dates/times of the online exam prep course: http://ot-advantage.com/ota/articles.aspx?id=1444

Can anyone tell me where to find more practice tests? I took rita, johnson, and the nbcot tests already. Part of my problem is that I need to practice sitting at a computer answering questions for four hours, if anyone knows anymore practice tests I can use that would be great. Thanks
Posted by: rg at 6/2/2009 1:28 PM

Have you taken any of the online official NBCOT practice tests? They have a menu of choices for people to pick a useful test; CST, 2-hr, 4-hr, specific area (mental health, phys dis...)... Go to the exam candidates section on the NBCOT site and they tell you how to access the exams from castleworldwide.com.
Posted by: examprep at 6/2/2009 11:52 PM

If you were going to buy only 1 extra study tool besides the official NBCOT study guide (i have it) which would you invest in? Occupational Therapy Examination Review Guide by Caryn Johnson or National Occupational Therapy Certification Exam Review and Study Guide, by Rita Cottrell?
Any comments welcome.
Positive thoughts out to all my fellow OT students who have yet to pass the exam. It is a rocky boat to be in, but we will be smooth sailing soon. The storm will pass
Posted by: kara12lee at 6/3/2009 12:22 PM

I posted before requesting info on more practice tests. I took all of the nbcot tests but not one of them is 170 questions, and most are not anywhere near four hours long. I really need to practice test taking for four hours. It seems that rita is the only one with 170 question exams, but those questions are not so similar to nbcot questions. Should I just practice sitting for four hours doing work? or retaking exams I already practiced?
to kara, if you are going to invest in one book I would say the johnson book. I have it and everyone else I spoke to swore by it

I had taken the NBCOT exam three times, and I just recently passed the exam on my third time. If I can recommend one thing it is DO AS MANY PRACTICE questions as you can. You already know the content if you have studied the Rita Fleming study guide. I took the exam my second time and focused on the content, however that isn't the answer to passing the exam. Do many questions as possible and also check out Barnes and Noble, Borders and public libraries because they have many practice tests which you can do in order to save money. I also ordered a content binder and the flash cards. I think one the biggest mistakes that I made was focusing on the minor details the first two times I took the exam. There are many content questions out there, the two books that I focused on were the Johnson Book and a book with the author Mosby's.......Hope this helps...Good luck to everyone that is planning on taking the exam anytime soon!!

I, too, have been unsuccessful in passing the NBCOT exam after three attempts. My lowest scaled score was in the Domain #4 - Uphold professional standards and responsibilites to promote quality in practice. I have purchased all of the recommended study guides and would appreciate some advise on what and how to study this particular domain to bring up the score. Thanks, mmbham

After i took the practice test from the nbcot exam and noticed that i got alot of quetions wrong pertaining to domain 3, how do i work on that weakness. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

anyone taking the OTR test soon?? I wish to form a study group online and we can help each other out by posting and discussing Q's and other areas in which we feel weaker. I have taken the test twice (1 for each pattern) and have missed by 1-2% each time. I have all the study materials and lot of extra Q's. anybody interested can reply at ani_kuv@yahoo.co.in. we can communicate via email and/or skype/voicechat. thanks!

leslie, i too have been unsuccessful in getting a score of more than 450 for domain 4 on my actual tests and i figured out that i try to over analyze the Q. i think we focus on minor details and try to assume conditions not mentioned directly in the Q. I am getting good scores in content tests and in domains 1,2,3. may be we could help each other out by discussing the Q's. I just did that with one of my study buddy's and she did pass her test recently. I am taking the test in 4 weeks.

Hey Anisha:) I have also failed the test twice. The second time my score was 432 (still bad, but I raised it a TON since the first one). Oh you were so close with 1-2% off! You will definitely get it next time:) I would be interested in studying with you. Here is my email: Danaraedaniel@yahoo.com. I have made a lot of study guides. I am thinking about ordering the new official NBCOT study guide. Talk to you soon:)

Hi Harmeet. Sorry to hear abt exam results. I am sure u can do it. I am taking my exam next week, fingers crossed. I am revising Rita and Johnson. Took NBCOT online exam and passed both the simulation and the 2hrs one. I don't know if you have tried that as well. Gives the confidence but to be honest on Rita's MCQ's I didn't score well. Do give some tips if that you think it can be helpful in this forum. Thanks

I'm glad I stumbled across this page. I too have taken the exam and failed. I'm so frustrated, I just want to move on with my life!! I take it again in August. Is there anyone in Philadelphia that would like to form a study group with me? I need a little more motivation!!!

Also do you have to take the exam in a certain amount of time after your have failed it previously? I know you can't take it before 45 days, but do you have to re-take it on the next available test date?
Posted by: MeekersOT at 7/8/2009 7:47 PM

MeekersOT, you can reapply 15 days after your exam but need to wait 45 days for the ATT letter to go through and once you get that you can reschedule the exam. So a good 2 months is really what you are looking at. Also, I am not in Phili but if you are looking for someone to study with let me know we can maybe collaborate n give each other advice! ~ HarmeetOT

General question... what piece of equipment does the OT suggest to a family of a child 5yo with CP who wishes to sit independently in the bathtub. The child doesn't like to be reclined in the tub when the parents hold her. Since we are all studying for the exam, I figured I try and get some feedback about it. Let me know if you have any ideas
Posted by: kara12lee at 7/19/2009 6:48 PM

i believe the answer is non skid mat and add a waist ring to keep child upright... i remember this question as well. lol

Great thats what I was thinking as well. We should all post when we pass this exam to give hope to people viewing this blog. Reading back over, its a bit depressing. Lets be happy and positive. I do not fear this test anymore. I got it this time!

Someone wrote about those flash cards secrets. Don't buy them!!!!! They are old and terrible. (The guide is bad too). Buy the offical books and I also bought the http://www.NBCOTEXAM.com study guide for $24. It's a huge assorment of study notes that you can print out. Well worth the 24 dollars. I found stuff I forgot since school.

My other test tips:
1. Eat a good breakfast the day of the test
2. Review your notes for only 1 hour before the test (you will get drained otherwise)
3. after the test, pamper yourself.. you deserve it!

GOOD LUCK!!

Congrats on passing the exam..you guys should be proud of yourselves..wish me luck
Posted by: leslie at 9/1/2009 8:39 PM

Leslie,
Thank you! You NEED to be positive. I think that is some good advice. Also, take Alison's course if you can because she has some great strategies for breaking down the question. Take practice tests, and when you get one wrong know why it is wrong why all the other answers are wrong. Know it forward and backward. :) When you get in there. Smile it lowers your heart rate! LOL. Good luck, I'll be checking to see new successful postings of PASSING!
Also, YEY HARMEET, we did it girl. So Happy, and excited for what is to come.

Hello fellow OT ADVANTAGE... so, since I passed I would like to sell my Johnson book and the Rita Fleming-Castaldy (Cotrell) book the 2008 4th edition. both are obviously used and highlighted. I do not have the original CD's but that can easily be fixed. Email me at hagroia@yahoo.com if you need to have these books to pass the exam... i can start a paypal account. I am willing to sell each individual or both together if you want. I will tell you the price if you are interested. K thanks~ HarmeetOT

I took the OTR exam for the first time and passed! (not with flying colors, but that doesn't matter). I studied for a month, and the best study guide money can buy is the TherapyEd Book, it's like $80 but soo worth it! The book is almost as if you compiled all of your study materials and textbooks into an outline format with pictures and practice tests. One warning: the practice exams on the cd-rom are hard! if you get a 60% on them you'll pass no problem. I made flash cards of things like ADA measurements and grasp patterns and such that I would look through each night. The main thing about the test is that it doesn't matter how much you study, it looks more at your reasoning. And always look at a question asking "what are they really asking me here?" So basically, don't try to memorize things (accept SCI levels, Allen Cog levels, etc). Also, I highly recommend buying the practice exams from NBCOT's website, they're a bit pricey, but I definitely got my money's worth! I recommend doing those about a week or so before the exam. Good luck!

Has anyone taken the exam around the first of sept (i took my 2nd attempt sept 1) and or the last of August and found out their unofficial score result yet?

I took my first exam July 10th and found out on July 15 my unofficial result (even though the grading date was the 21st of July). I am starting to wonder if some computer just tosses out the result on the 15th and 30th of every month despite the “official grading date”. Let me know if anyone has any information…thanks

((jfyi I took the online OT advantage course and it did help me alot this time with ID'ing the stem and what the ? is really asking for! I really hope I passed))

Just remember you answered to the best of your ability. Be confident in the choices you picked. Try to do some fun things that you haven't been able to do since you have been in OT school and studying for this exam. I hope you passed:)
